Message from Reika Kaneko of Wakeoe Shrine

Message from Reika Kaneko of Wakeoe Shrine

Hello, I am Reika Kaneko, a negi(Shinto Priest)at Wakeoe shrine. Today I would like to share a little about the traditional attire worn by shrine maidens, and known as miko.
The clothing worn by miko is a type of traditional attire used by those who serveat Shinto shrines. It symbolized purity and devotion, and is an important garment for serving in sacred spaces.

Upper Garment-Hakui-i - (White Robe)
The tope is a white kimono called haku-i. White represents purity, innocence, and holiness. reflecting the pure spirit of one who serves the deities.

Lower Garment- Hi-bakama-(Scalet Hakama)
THe bottom is a bright scarlet hakama, called hi-bakama.Scarlet(hi-iro) is a traditional Japanese color believed to have the power of warding off evil and bringin protection.
The striking contrast of pure white and vibrant red is not only beautiful, but also skymbolizes Japan's sacred aesthetics.
