Japanese calligraphy 「和」 by Tatsuki Yuasa
Japanese calligraphy 「和」 by Tatsuki Yuasa
The character ”Wa”「和」carries the meanings of peace, harmony, and gentleness. In ancient China, it referred to the absence of conflict - a state of calm and balance. When the character came to Japan, it took on a deeper meaning, symbolizing the Japanese spirit itself, as seen in words like Yamato (大和), an ancient name for Japan.
The character is made of two parts:
"禾(grain), symbolizin nature and sustenace, and "口" (mouth), representing communication and connection. Together, they express people sharing food and words in peace - the essence of a harmonious life.
Tha is why "Wa" appears in so many aspects of Japanese culture:
Washoku (Japanese cuisine)
Wafuku (kimono),
Washi (Japanese paper), and Waka (classical poetry).
Each embodies the spirit of harmony - balance with nature, respect for others, and beauty in simpliciy.
Even today, Wa represents not only "Japan" but also a way of life that values unity, calmness, and mutual understanding.
